The silky shark Carcharhinus falciformis is the primary elasmobranch bycatch in the global tuna purse seine fishery using fish aggregating devices (FADs). Information on the associative behaviour of this species with floating objects remains limited. Here the use of various electronic tags provided important new insight into this behaviour. Thirty-eight juvenile silky sharks (69 to 116 cm total length; TL) were tagged with acoustic tags at 9 drifting FADs equipped with satellite-linked acoustic receivers in the western Indian Ocean (total monitoring = 154 d). Presence/absence and swimming depth data were transmitted from the receivers. A subset of 17 individuals was also fitted with pop-up satellite archival tags (PSATs; n = 13), or internal archival tags... |

During this study, fifteen shark heads of sand tiger shark Carcharias taurus (Rafinesque, 1810) were analyzed. The studied material was obtained in the Santos Fishing Terminal, São Paulo, Brazil. The heads dissection was focused on the characterization of the mandibular muscles and on the description of the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve. The C. taurus mandibular muscles are represented by: m. preorbitalis, m. levator palatoquadrati, m. quadratomandibularis and m. intermandibularis. The origin of the trigeminal nerve of C. taurus is located in a lateral portion of the medulla oblongata. In the orbita, the trigeminal nerve branches off to originate the mandibular branch that innervates the muscles which are derived from the mandibular arch. The... |

Concentrations of 6 trace metals (Ag, Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) in the muscle of 2 sharks (Galeus melastomus and Scyliorhinus canicula), 4 teleosts (Helicolenus dactylopterus, Lepidorhombus boscii, Micromesistius poutassou and Phycis blennoides) and 1 crustacean (Nephrops norvegicus) were compared between the Bay of Biscay (Atlantic Ocean) and the Gulf of Lions (Mediterranean Sea). Although average concentrations and the trace element pollution index were generally higher in the Gulf of Lions, significant differences between the two ecosystems were only found for Zn for Helicolenus dactylopterus, and for Ag and Cu for the crustacean N. norvegicus. Moreover, some relationships between trophic level or size and metal concentrations were found for these two... |
